Stack – Attack and Defence

17 05 2011

Buffer overflow attack had been spreading since this classic paper “Smashing The Stack For Fun And Profit” by Aleph One was published.

There are several protection to prevent this such as stackshield, stackguard or IBM Pro Police which was built into gcc since gcc4.1. It was a long time history, and lots of fun to walkthrough this cat and mouse game.

Today, I dropped a visit . His article was well-written and worth reading.

For anybody who want to disable gcc’s stack protector in order to learn this kind of things, please compile with
gcc -ggdb -fno-stack-protector -o output.o filename.c
